How prop firms work

A prop firm gives you a trading account to manage in exchange for a share of the profit. You pay for an evaluation, reach a profit target without breaking the daily or maximum loss limit, and then trade a funded account. Splits run 15-100% across the firms here, and a $100,000 account costs $15 to $997 to start.

The headline split rarely decides which firm is right. The drawdown type, any consistency rule, the payout schedule and the platform matter more, and they differ a lot between firms in the same market. That is what the comparison tool and the rules comparison line up.

Where to start

Before you pay for anything

The question that matters most is whether a firm actually pays. The payout tracker records real on-chain withdrawals as they settle, and firms that stopped paying are on the delisted firms page. New to all of this? Start with the beginner guide, how to pass a challenge and the glossary.

Prop firm FAQs

The questions traders ask before their first account.

What is a prop firm?

A proprietary trading firm funds traders with its capital. You pay for an evaluation, reach a profit target without breaking the loss limits, then trade a funded account and keep most of the profit, usually 15-100% depending on the firm and program. The evaluation fee is your only real cost.

How do prop firms work?

You buy a challenge at a set account size, for example $50,000 or $100,000. Hit the profit target while staying inside the daily and maximum loss limits, and you move to a funded account. From there you request payouts on the firm’s schedule. Most funded accounts are simulated, and the payout is your share of that simulated profit.

Futures, forex or crypto: which prop firm should I choose?

Trade the market you already know. Futures firms suit index and commodity day traders and are open to US traders. Forex firms cover currency pairs, metals and indices with more leverage. Crypto firms trade around the clock, including weekends. The full breakdown is in crypto vs forex vs futures prop firms.

How many prop firms do you review?

57 firms across futures, forex and crypto, with 1,334 account sizes priced. A few firms cover two markets and are listed in both.

How much does a prop firm challenge cost?

A $100,000 account costs $15 to $997 across the firms here, depending on the market, the program and the discount. Futures firms often add an activation fee once you pass, so compare the full cost in the comparison tool, not just the sticker price.

Which prop firm is the best?

There is no single winner; it depends on your market and trading style. Start with the top picks for futures, forex or crypto, or take the firm quiz to get matched on your own rules and budget.

Are prop firms legit?

The established ones are, and you can check it instead of taking anyone’s word for it. The payout tracker shows real on-chain withdrawals, and firms that stopped paying are listed on the delisted firms page. Start small and request your first payout early.

Do I need a discount code?

Almost always worth it. There are 96 active codes right now, up to 90% off. Find them all on the deals page.

Can US traders use prop firms?

Yes. Most futures prop firms are US-based or open to US traders. Many forex and crypto firms restrict US residents, so check the firm’s restricted countries first. See the best prop firms for US traders.

What are perps prop firms?

Perps firms fund traders on crypto perpetual futures, often on exchange-grade platforms. They are coming to the site soon with their own reviews, rankings and deals. Until then, the crypto prop firms section covers the closest options.
